Immunisation – Medicine & Inventions

Published by AudioBookOne.net under History

Learn about the process of Immunisation with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series.

For many people, immunisation is their only hope at survival. It is responsible for saving millions of lives every year, eradicating some of the most horrific viruses, and increasing global health awareness. Without immunisation, historical plagues such as the “Black Death,” “Smallpox,” and “Spanish Influenza” would still be around. If we didn’t have immunisation, many of us wouldn’t be here.

Immunisation records go as far back as the 10th century, but the modern technique didn’t start until 1721. During this year, an English scientist named Edward Jenner noticed that milk maids who were infected with the cowpox virus were immune to smallpox outbreaks.

Perfect to listen to while commuting, exercising, shopping or cleaning the house.. iMinds brings knowledge to your MP3 with 8 minute information segments to whet your mental appetite and broaden your mind.

Immoral

Published by AudioBookOne.net under Fiction

Lieutenant Jonathan Stride is suffering from an ugly case of déjà vu. For the second time in a year, a beautiful teenage girl has disappeared off the streets of Duluth, Minnesota—gone without a trace, like a bitter gust off Lake Superior. The two victims couldn’t be more different. First it was Kerry McGrath, bubbly, sweet sixteen and now Rachel Deese, a strange, sexually charged, wild child. The media hounds Stride to catch a serial killer. The search carries him from the icy stillness of the northern woods to the erotic heat of Las Vegas, where he must decide which facts are real and which are illusions.  Stride’s own life becomes changed forever by the secrets he uncovers, secrets that stretch across time in a web of lies, death, and illicit desire. Secrets that are chillingly immoral.

Idiot, The

Published by AudioBookOne.net under Fiction

“My intention is to portray a really beautiful soul.”¾Dostoevsky

In The Idiot, a saintly man, Prince Myshkin, is thrust into the heart of a society more concerned with wealth, power, and sexual conquest than the ideals of Christianity. Myshkin soon finds himself at the center of a violent love triangle in which a notorious woman and a beautiful young girl become rivals for his affections. Extortion, scandal, and murder follow, testing the wreckage left by human misery to find “man in man.”

The Idiot is a quintessentially Russian novel, one that penetrates the complex psyche of the Russian people. “They call me a psychologist,” wrote Dostoevsky. “That is not true. I’m only a realist in the higher sense; that is, I portray all the depths of the human soul.”

Author: Fyodor Dostoevsky

I?m Still Standing: From Captive U.S. Soldier to Free Citizen? My Journey Home

Published by AudioBookOne.net under Biography

Shoshana Johnson, the first black female soldier in America’s history to be taken as a prisoner of war, presents the much-anticipated story of her capture and imprisonment in Iraq and what happened after her rescue.

In March 2003, Operation Iraqi Freedom was barely in its infancy when a U.S. Army supply convoy was attacked in Iraq. Several soldiers were killed and six were taken prisoner. Their captors released a grainy video revealing the faces of the first POWs of the war in Iraq. One of the female soldiers was Shoshana Johnson, the first black female prisoner of war in America’s military history. The other was Jessica Lynch who caught the media’s attention.

Now, after years of coming to terms with her capture and its aftermath, Shoshana recounts her full story with candor, exposing her emotions and frustrations and addressing her fears. For the first time, she’ll also explain the strange decision made by higher-ups that led to their weapons jamming during the fight so they couldn’t defend themselves; the true reason why their convoy made a "wrong turn" which led to their capture; and what, exactly, happened to her and her fellow soldiers during the 22 days of their captivity, which none of them have told because of a military gag order. Her perspective of the ambush is revealing and her insight into life as a female POW inspirational.

I, Claudius: From the Autobiography of Tiberius Claudius Born 10 B.C. Murdered and Deified A.D. 54

Published by AudioBookOne.net under Fiction

Set in the first century a.d. in Rome and written as an autobiographical memoir, this colorful story of the life of the Roman emperor Claudius stands as one of the modern classics of historical fiction.

Physically weak and afflicted with stuttering, Claudius is initially despised and dismissed as an idiot. Shunted to the background of imperial affairs by his embarrassed royal family, he becomes a scholar and historian, while palace intrigues and murders surround him. Observing these dramas from beyond the public eye, Claudius escapes the cruelties inflicted on the rest of the royal family by its own members and survives to become emperor of Rome in a.d. 41.

Robert Graves (1895–1985) was an English poet, translator, and novelist. He fought in World War I and won international acclaim in 1929 with the publication of his memoir of the war, Good-bye to All That. He is most noted for his series of novels about the Roman emperor Claudius and was awarded the 1934 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for both I, Claudius and Claudius the God.
